The product brief starts with use and fit
A business sock, baby sock and performance sock require different yarns, gauges, welt pressure, cushioning and reinforcement. Size range, footwear, climate, wash conditions and expected use should be defined before artwork is converted into a knit programme.
Yarn and knit structure
Combed cotton, mercerised cotton, wool, polyester and performance blends can be combined with elastane and reinforcement yarns. Fine gauge creates a refined surface, while terry cushioning, mesh ventilation, rib structures and arch support add performance where needed.
Baby products require particular attention to soft contact, seam comfort and controlled elasticity. Sports products may require zoned compression, moisture management and reinforced wear areas.
Jacquard, sublimation and decoration
Jacquard artwork is knitted into the sock and should be simplified for needle count, stretch and colour-change limitations. Sublimation supports photographic and all-over artwork on compatible polyester-rich bases. Embroidery and silicone grip can add localized branding or function.
Sampling, quality control and packaging
A pre-production sample confirms fit, stretch, colours, artwork position, toe construction and overall hand feel. During production, size, pattern registration, elasticity and appearance are checked against the approved sample.
Belly bands, hangtags, folding cartons and rigid gift boxes can be developed together with the sock so retail presentation and logistics are considered from the start.
