Folding Carton vs Rigid Box vs Litho-Laminated Packaging

Choose the right custom box structure by comparing presentation, protection, packing speed, transport volume and production cost.

Folding, rigid and presentation box structures for branded products
01

Folding cartons: efficient and highly printable

Folding cartons are supplied flat and formed during packing. They are efficient to store and transport and offer excellent print and finishing possibilities for cosmetics, personal care, food, retail and pharmaceutical-style secondary packaging.

Board grade, grain direction, crease geometry, glue areas and product weight must be considered together. Inserts and window patches can add protection and product visibility without changing to a heavier box type.

02

Rigid boxes: premium presentation and long life

Rigid boxes are built from thick greyboard wrapped with printed or specialty paper. They arrive assembled and create a substantial presentation for beauty, jewellery, electronics, VIP gifts and launch sets.

They support magnetic, drawer, book-style, shoulder-and-neck and lid-and-base formats, but require more storage and shipping volume than flat folding cartons.

03

Litho-laminated packaging: print quality plus corrugated strength

Litho-laminated boxes bond a high-quality printed sheet to corrugated or heavy board. They are useful when the product needs stacking strength, transport protection or a retail-ready display while still requiring detailed graphics and controlled colour.

Flute type, board combination, lamination bond, warp, compression and die-cut accuracy are key technical controls.

The five questions that decide the structure

Before choosing a box, define the product and logistics rather than selecting only from a reference photograph.

  • What are the product dimensions, weight and fragile areas?
  • Will the box be packed by hand or on an automated line?
  • How much protection is required in storage and transport?
  • Is premium reuse or efficient flat delivery more important?
  • Which print finishes, insert materials and sustainability requirements apply?
