FSC, FSSC 22000 and OEKO-TEX: What They Mean for Your Project

Three familiar names answer different questions: where forest material comes from, how food-packaging safety is managed and how textiles are tested for harmful substances.

One project can require several kinds of evidence

FSC, FSSC 22000 and OEKO-TEX are not interchangeable badges. Each addresses a different part of a production decision, and the relevant certificate holder, product scope and transaction documents must be checked for the exact order.

We discuss these requirements at the beginning of the project so material sourcing, artwork, production planning and customer claims remain aligned.

02

FSC: verified forest-based material through the supply chain

FSC Chain of Custody verifies that FSC-certified forest-based materials are identified and tracked through the supply chain. For paper, board, packaging, books, catalogues, hangtags and other printed products, the relevant material route and claim are selected before production.

An FSC logo or claim is not added automatically. The certificate scope, eligible input, sales-document claim and trademark approval route must support the specific job.

03

FSSC 22000: a management system for food-safety risks

For packaging manufacturing, FSSC 22000 brings food-safety management, hazard analysis and packaging-sector prerequisite programmes into one controlled system. It supports decisions about hygiene, contamination prevention, traceability, approved suppliers, change control and corrective action.

Project-level food-contact suitability still depends on the complete material structure and intended conditions of use; certification does not replace material declarations or testing where those are required.

04

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: textiles tested for harmful substances

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 applies to textiles tested for harmful substances. Testing becomes stricter as expected skin contact increases, and the complete article — including threads, prints, coatings, labels and accessories — matters for a certified claim.

For apparel, socks, labels, bags and home textiles, we can review certified material and component options against the product's intended use. Certificate validity, product class and scope are confirmed per project before any claim is made.

05

The practical rule: verify the scope, not only the logo

Our quality team can assemble the applicable certificate and supplier-document set during technical approval. Customers should tell us the destination market, product use, claim they plan to print, retailer requirements and any testing protocol at the start of the brief.

This evidence-led approach protects both compliance and brand credibility while allowing responsible materials and controlled production to become a real part of the final product.
