Hot Foil, Cold Foil or Spot UV? A Packaging Finish Guide

A practical comparison of hot foil, cold foil, metallic ink, metallized board, spot UV and high-build UV for premium folding cartons and rigid boxes.

Premium rigid packaging with metallic and tactile print finishes
01

Start with the effect the brand needs

Premium packaging finishes are often grouped together, but they create different visual, tactile and production results. The correct choice depends on artwork detail, material, run length, surface coverage, budget and how the box will be handled.

A finish should strengthen the visual hierarchy rather than cover every surface. Logos, borders, product names and small feature areas usually create more impact than an uncontrolled full-area effect.

02

Hot foil and cold foil

Hot foil stamping transfers a foil film with heat, pressure and a metal die. It delivers a crisp, opaque metallic effect and can be combined with embossing or debossing for extra depth. It is well suited to logos, typography and controlled premium details.

Cold foil uses adhesive and a foil film within the printing process. It can reproduce finer details and larger areas and may be overprinted with colour. Material, artwork and production volume determine whether it is more suitable than hot foil.

03

Spot UV, high-build UV and varnish

Spot UV adds gloss to selected areas and creates contrast against a matte or soft-touch background. High-build UV creates a thicker, more tactile raised effect. Aqueous, dispersion and UV varnishes can also provide overall protection or controlled gloss and texture.

Registration tolerance matters when a glossy detail must align precisely with small type or fine artwork. A physical sample or production proof is recommended for critical premium applications.

04

Metallic ink and metallized board

Metallic ink produces a printed metallic tone but generally has less mirror-like reflectivity than foil. Metallized board or paper provides a reflective base that can be printed with opaque white and colour to create complex metallic effects across larger areas.

The final decision should consider fingerprinting, scuff resistance, fold performance and compatibility with lamination, varnish, gluing and recycling requirements.
